Will Wonder pass 100M mark this weekend?

2nd Update

Lionsgate/Participant Media’s Wonder is projected to crack the century mark by Sunday with an estimated $101.1M. That’s easily Lionsgate’s highest release of 2017, not counting carryover La La Land which minted $120.1M of its $151.1M in the current calendar year. By the end of the year, it’s also expected that 20th Century Fox’s Murder on the Orient Express and Paramount’s Daddy’s Home 2 will hit $100M.

Wonder will be close behind with just over $8 million meaning it could hit $100 million by the end of the weekend. This is likely enough to earn a profit, even before taking into account its international numbers.

*****************************

The fourth weekend of Warner Bros.-DC Entertainment’s “Justice League” and the third weekend of Lionsgate’s “Wonder” should battle for second with about $9 million each. “Justice League” crossed the $200 million milestone on Tuesday on its 19th day, becoming the 10th movie to achieve that mark in 2017. The tentpole, however, is not delivering on expectations, given a budget that may be as high as $300 million. The disappointment was enough to cause an executive shake-up of Warner Bros.’ DC Entertainment operations, with Jon Berg departing as its point person and becoming a production partner with Roy Lee.

“Wonder,” playing at 3,518 sites, should cross the $100 million mark by the end of the weekend. The drama, starring Jacob Tremblay as a fifth-grader with a facial deformity, has been highly profitable for Lionsgate with a $20 million budget.

In third, Lionsgate's Wonder delivered an estimated $8.45 million, which pushes its domestic cume over $100 million. Wonder also added $11.4 million internationally this weekend from 56 markets bringing its international cume to $29.3 million, which includes a second weekend at #1 in Australia where it has so far grossed $4.4 million.

Bringing home $11.4M in 56, the Stephen Chbosky-directed movie now has an offshore cume of $29.3M. Auds were particularly responsive in Brazil where emotional pics play strongly. The opening was $3.6M on 800 screens. In Australia, the family drama remained No. 1 with $4.4M after two weeks and a small 28% drop. The UK added 8% versus last frame and is at $4.3M. Spain saw a 42% jump, in part thanks to that national holiday, and has a $3.1M total to date. Mexico is the next major market to release this Thursday. International will continue to open through the holiday season into early next year.

**************************

Lionsgate’s third weekend of inspirational drama “Wonder” finished in third place with $8.5 million at 3,519 North American sites with a 35% decline. “Wonder” became the 27th movie of the year to cross the $100 million mark — and one of the least costly among that group, given its $20 million budget. Production companies on the Jacob Tremblay vehicle are Mandeville Films, Participant Media, Walden Media and TIK Films.
