Remembering the Bright, Wild, All-Too-Brief Life of British Aristocrat Mark Shand

“I thought of him as Crocodile Dundee,” says Julia Roberts, who made two PBS documentaries with Shand in the late 1990s, Orangutans, filmed in Borneo, and Wild Horses of Mongolia. “But he wasn’t a chauvinist and he wasn’t a show-off.” For Goldie Hawn, who co-starred with Shand in The Elephants of India for PBS, in 1996, he was “a real Renaissance guy” and “sort of a rogue—irrepressible, contagious, maddening.”

The books and the TV documentaries with Goldie Hawn and Julia Roberts that followed also made Shand a celebrity, complete with groupies. ... al_twitter
